Love's Rescue (Keys of Promise, #1) by Christine Johnson

When her mother dies, Elizabeth Benjamin heads home to Key West, determined to transform herself into the perfect Southern belle her parents always wished her to be. But nothing goes according to plan. Her crippled brother resents her, the servants do not obey her, and Rourke O'Malley, the dashing man she vowed to forget, refuses to relinquish his hold on her heart. Worst of all, it becomes painfully obvious that her father is not the upright man he appears to be.

As family secrets come to light, Elizabeth is faced with a difficult choice: to do her duty and abandon her dreams, or to leave her life of privilege behind to chase the man her father sees as little better than a pirate.

From the first emotional page, author Christine Johnson throws readers into a world of impossible choices, hidden desires, and heart-melting romance in the steamy south. Readers will cheer for Elizabeth and Rourke as they battle the odds and the elements to secure their future.

My Review

We meet Elizabeth Benjamin as she heads home to Key West after learning her mother has passed. What a journey that ends up as quite an adventure, and life endangerment, as the ship runs aground and is wrecked. Thus she is placed back in the hands of her unrequited love Rourke O’Malley, or so she thinks.
Rourke it appears feels the same about Elizabeth, but can the two of them ever get together? They are thwarted at every turn, and as with the rest of the story there are all kinds of twists that you won’t see coming.
Elizabeth will have money if she marries the man her family approves of, and now we see some dandy looking as if he will win her hand. Can just picture this fellow, and even if he marries her, I don’t think that I will ever like him.
There is a lot of guilt going on here and we have to dig deep to find some of it, and even when exposed some are not willing to part with it. I can see where Elizabeth feels guilty for her brother Charles accident, but does he harbor resentment towards her?
You are about to embark on quite an adventure, and we have some of the darkness of slavery here, and you are about to see how it is dealt with. This book takes place back in the 1840’s and with the next in the series we move up to the 1850’s, cannot wait for the next Keys of Promise.

I received this book through the Revell Reads Blogger Program, and was not required to give a positive review.
